If it’s not already awesome that I work for one of the most innovative companies in the world, it has just gotten better. Whenever I am asked the question “Where do you work?” and I provide the answer “3M” I am often faced with a follow-up question of “What’s that?”, however, I always find pleasure in describing the company that I work for because we have done amazingly well in this world through our products, finding a solution for everyone in every industry, I myself have benefitted from some of those products.

On January 31, 2017, I received an email inviting 3M employees from all over the world to apply for the 3M Impact program. Considering that this was something new with no prior warning, I had to read on to find out what it was about. The first paragraph read “At 3M, we are committed to making a positive impact on every life around the globe. Through this mission, we also create opportunities for 3Mers to drive change in our communities while developing their personal and professional skills. The 3M Impact program brings together these commitments to empower participants to make a meaningful and lasting difference in the communities where we live and work. Through 3M Impact, teams of 3Mers travel to a different country, where they spend two weeks collaborating with a local organization to help solve a pressing social or environmental issue.”

I was already interested and immediately clicked the link to apply. We had to complete a long application that included questions about our job function, our contribution score and leadership score for the previous year and several essay questions about our experiences and the approach we would take if placed in certain situation. Considering that I am a true success story, there was quite a lot that I could write about. In fact, I struggled with which one of my circumstances should I use as an example. I did what needed to be done and submitted and waited….

On February 19, 2018, I received an email “Congratulations! You have been selected to take part in a 20-minute phone interview as part of your application to the 3M Impact program.” This was at 1 am in the morning and I was at work trying to solve an IT failure so it was indeed some good news in a time of a bad situation. I was excited! I was in awe, but I immediately went in and selected the date that I wanted to do the interview.

A week later I did the interview with a gentleman over the phone, phone interviews are hard for me because I am not able to get a feel of how the interviewer is perceiving me, there is no face to face interaction but I did what needed to be done, applied my best ability.

Guess what???? I was selected! I was selected for the first batch for the year May 2018 for the India project! All I kept doing was laughing and smiling as if I was going crazy. What made it even more amazing was this email to my manager “I would like to take a moment to recognize this significant accomplishment, as only 50 participants were chosen out of nearly 800 applications.

Program Highlights:

  • Spend two immersive weeks in-country – collaborating with a local nonprofit organization, social enterprise, or government agency
  • Make a positive economic or social impact on the community
  • Strengthen leadership skills, develop market insights, and spur innovative thinking

Thank you, Alberto, for always believing in me and not hesitating to give me the approval to participate in the program considering I will be gone for 2 weeks!

What I know so far, Is that I will be going to Bangalore India for 2 weeks, haven’t been informed about the company that I will be working with nor the project I will be working on but I do know that I will be doing this pro bono project with 11 of 3M’s employees, one from Chile, one from Italy, one from the Emirate and the others will be a mix of Canada and the US plus this little Jamaican go-getter girl!

I am excited to go on this journey, meet new people, learn about the Indian culture and making an IMPACT. Thank you, 3M, for this wonderful opportunity to showcase my skills while helping others in the process. I will keep you posted on the journey.

Thank you sis!! Jesus has been saying yes in my life, even in areas where I have said no! His plans are greater than mine. So my life is in his control now! I will continue to do great things and break down all the barriers, we all know where I am coming from and where I am now but this is by no means where I am going!
